Annotary is a convenient browser extension and has simple functions but really useful, allows you to highlight and annotate web pages and allows you to share your notes. One of the major uses of this extension can be safely sharing notes among colleagues or between students and university.

Pros :

  • If you want to use it will need to go to the Store and download Annotary extension (for Chrome or Firefox).
  • Once installed you will have in your toolbar an icon with the letter A yellow highlight. Once clicking on the icon, you will see a toolbar, will be immediately filled out the Page Title field based on the metadata of the page, of course, can be changed, then you have available the frame of the notes which also supports the use of tags.
  • After you save the page, then you can start studying the page of your interest, and you will begin to point out (after clicking on the marker shaped button ) highlighting each part of the text of interest, after each underscore you can enter your memo about some area you have just highlighted.
  • After finishing your work, you can choose to send and share your work with a colleague, friend or student.
  • The share options are different, you can share your work through the major social networks (like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google Plus ...) and you can also send an e-mail.
  • You also have available also the option to use the link that Annotary assigns as a unique link to your work, you can then share the link where ever you want.
  • The convenience of this sharing feature is to allow a user who receives your work to display and interact with your work directly on the page that you have used.

Cons :

  • Nothing to say, easy to use and also free.

I have to admit, I'm not using Cubby a lot. There is so many competition, that at sometimes, you need to stick to one. Cubby is not very popular, so when you want to share with others, you will get a lot of "I don't have a Cubby account". I know, the answer is "go get one, it's free" but you will receive a "why, I already use ***" So, why Cubby? First, it's by LogMeIn, one of the best cloud company. Second, they give you 1 GB free for each friend you invite, and that's a lot! And Third... you have a real selective sync. Instead of having a root folder, with a subfolder, you create "Cubbies". A Cubby is like a folder. You can share, and sync a Cubby. When you install the desktop client, you will select which Cubby you want to sync. You may want to sync your documents on your personal and professional computer, but maybe sync your personal picture only on your personal computers. Also, maybe your pictures are on your C: drive, but your documents are on your D: drive. With Cubby, you select the Cubby, click sync, and choose the destination folder, for each Cubby. I use it to sync my Outlook signatures, my games save, my apps configurations, etc. You can simply create a Cubby by Dragging and Dropping a folder into Cubby. It may be used to share, or to backup. Unfortunately, storage is pretty expensive. You can have 1 TB for 10$/month from competition while with Cubby, 1 TB will be 40$/month. The Cubby client is pretty big, without a lot of advanced features. They have DirectSync to sync across computers, without the cloud, but only with the paid version. The data is encrypted, and you can add client-side encryption if you really need it!

Pros :

  • Selective Sync Select destinations individually 1 GB for friend invite From LogMeIn.

Cons :

  • Not very popular.
  • The client is ugly.

Watchdox is an application that allows users to share documents in the most secure manner. It is very convenient to use, and the users can specify the read, write, print and other permissions for their documents. The document is then shared through a link over email. Depending on the permissions set for that particular user, the receiver can access the document. Watchdox offers a choice of hybrid, SaaS or on-premise deployment to businesses. Watchdox even has a Blackberry app that is quite obvious now as Blackberry has acquired it. It offers various plugins so that various documents can be shared via Outlook using Watchdox protection.

Pros :

  • The best part is the document tracking capability of Watchdox.
  • It provides a tracker for all the activity related to the shared documents.
  • It tells you if the document has been opened and printed the document if the document has been forwarded and even the geographical location from where the document is accessed.
  • The permissions specified while sharing the document can be modified anytime even after sharing the document.
  • One can also specify the time after which the access to the document will be revoked automatically.
  • Another important feature is that one can even edit Office documents using its mobile editor that makes the need for editing the documents with another app redundant.
  • Watchdox also allows the annotation of the stored documents and these documents can be shared along with comments and annotations with other users.
  • Few advanced security features make Watchdox one of the most secure file sharing and sync service for enterprises.
  • One can disable the screenshot capture of the shared documents.
  • One can set watermarks so that even if someone takes a printout or a screenshot, the content remains copyrighted.
  • Also, Watchdox builds security within the document that is as good as it can get to secure your documents.
  • All other security tools like Firewalls, anti-virus solutions, etc. have loopholes and can be exploited by hackers but when the documents itself are encrypted, your critical data is in safe hands.

Cons :

  • Watchdox mobile editor packs a punch of functionalities by allowing editing the office documents, but it is far away from a full-fledged office alternative.
  • There is no option of creating new documents from scratch.

The Annotary tool downloads seamlessly and quickly without causing any kind of system slowdown. If you look at a lot of websites, bookmark a lot of pages, and need a better way to keep track of important sentences, Annotary is worth a download.

I hate beta because it can entice developers to keep their product in a constant state of development (I’m looking at you, Google). Even in Cubby’s beta infancy, I believe it is the first true competitor to make a legitimate run on the cloud syncing crown. LogMeIn has a solid user base and they are known for producing a good product at the right price. If they extend that level of quality and product innovation into an already feature robust Cubby, Google Drive will be the least of Dropbox’s problems.
