  • Tableau Desktop is a superlative self-service business intelligence (BI) tool that continues to be the market leader in BI because of its wide variety of visualizations, extensive supported data types, and slick finish.

  • Incredibly powerful software that does many things with ease, but still requires code writing for more complex analysis

This software is by far the easiest BI software I've used (tried Zoho, Excel Pivot tables, Microsoft BI, and many others). It's a slam dunk for drag-and-drop analysis of lots of things. But if you want to do more complicated analysis of what you're looking at beyond face-value graphs of plotting X and Y axis, you're going to need to learn how to perform some custom coding. Fortunately, there are LOTS of free guides available through community forums and online blogs. But it takes time to read those, and unless you're trying to do exactly what the examples show, it takes quite a bit more time to adapt said examples to whatever is specific about your scenario. The price isn't cheap at something like $1000/yr, so it's no small investment. But from every other software I've seen, I'd buy this over the others.

Pros : Super simple drag-and-drop interface for plotting out info. Massive online community forums packed with information and examples Huge amount of content produced by others on various sites (blogs and such). Ability to quickly open someone else's example worksheet to get "hands on" with the data from their examples (as opposed to just reading about it).

Cons : Like every other software I've seen, there's no escaping the need to code custom functions for complex or deeper analysis The price tag is fairly high - likely cost prohibitive for a small business who is just looking to try and analyze data that their POS software won't do for them, or that Excel Pivot tables just can't quite seem to cover.

    Great app for mid-size business

Tableau is the fastest, most delightful way to stay on top of your data with incredible visualization capability. It is rapid-fire business intelligence that equips anyone to analyze data quickly.

Pros : It allows to connect to any kind of data source and interact with data using controls that are automatically optimized.

Cons : The 2 weeks software trial period is not really enough time to understand the power of the product.

  • Ease-of-use

It is very hard to learn by yourself. However, once you've learned it, it is quite easy to use.

    Functionality

It handles large amounts of data very well. The BI visualization is quick and easy.

    Product Quality

It's getting progressively better. I wish dashboard rendering would be a lot faster.

    Customer Support

I have never used their customer support.

    Likes Best

The software is quite robust and flexible. The vendor very actively updates and improves the software.

    Likes Least

It's difficult to learn by yourself. Nobody in my company knew how to use Tableau, so we all learned by trial and error. The progress was extremely slow in the beginning, and everybody resisted using Tableau. We couldn't figure out why it was always crashing, why it was so slow, etc. I think the online videos aren't helpful. I wish there was an easier way to learn how to use it.

    Recommendations

For those who work with massive quantities of data, I would recommend getting Windows 64-bit and at least 4GB of memory. Otherwise, Tableau is pretty much useless, as it will crash all the time, and there is no auto-recover.

    Ease-of-use

If you know anything about SQL and BI, this tool makes it easy.

    Functionality

Sometimes you need to move to the big guns, but Tableau will meet most day-to-day needs.

    Product Quality

There is always a give-and-take robustness versus ease of use. I would say that Tableau does a good job in balancing the two objectives.

    Customer Support

I haven't needed customer support so I can not really speak to this.

    Likes Best

I like the ease of use and the quick ad hoc reporting abilities.

    Likes Least

Complicated BI projects take longer in Tableau than in more sophisticated, albeit higher-learning-curve, projects.

    Recommendations

Use it and push it, see what it can do and what it can't do. Large multi-table/data sources make tableau crawl, but unless you want to build custom solution, it's great for ad hoc creation.

    Ease-of-use

It's super easy to use for a moderately-experienced computer user but not for a beginning computer user (like many software packages).

    Functionality

It has fantastic simplicity for a moderate-level computer user (but not for complete computer beginners).

    Product Quality

It's super easy. It's a great way to learn data visualization basics without becoming an expert in a new discipline.

    Customer Support

Not applicable. I don't user the customer support.

    Likes Best

Tableau has super easy configurations of your data. From standard bar and line graphs and pie charts to more colorful and novel Bubble, Heat map, Treemap and Box-and-whisker plots, Tableau organizes the data in surprisingly simple and enjoyable views.

    Likes Least

There isn't much I dislike at this point. It's just a great product.

    Recommendations

Whether you're considering an actual statistical package or just doing data visualization through products Qlikview or even d3js.org, you should do a trial of Tableau. I actually also like Qlikview for its fantastic filtering and simple, intuitive data manipulation (for non-SQL wizards), but for a large selection of super-easy (drag and drop) visualization formats, Tableau has all these products by a mile.

  • Named the top large company among Washington State workplaces by Puget Sound Business Journal ,Tableau Software is one of the fastest growing companies in Washington state. Given the trend of making data and technology more automated and accessible to the masses, Tableau Software is definitely one to watch in an industry that has nothing but room for growth.

  • Tableau has an easy-to-use product (as BI/analytics tools go) and the ability to let the software sort facts from dimensions is potentially a game changer. If I were going to pay $999 or $1999 a copy I’d want some of the rough edges I pointed out to be smoothed, but overall I like the Public version, and may have recourse to use it again at some point.

  • Tableau software is fast, easy to use software that builds on a person’s ability to think visually. Columns of data which before had to be compiled, organized and displayed can be instantly accessed and presented in formats which make the information clear while deepening the understanding. Displays are responsive to the questions asked in real-time. Drag and click features mean that users need no special training. Data Engine technology means that companies with larger databases can perform similar functions with the same speed and ease on their PC.
