SaaS predates the Cloud

By on May 19, 2012

An IT company recently reported that in the late 90s, they had sold software to a client who was having problems installing and managing it because the IT department was waiting for the hardware to arrive. Purchase was having its own problems with the hardware vendor and in all this delay, the software was ready and available but opportunities were being lost.

At this stage, the client company suggested that since a demo was shown to them over the Internet, why could they not continue to use the Internet based software and pay rental instead.

This, the CEO of the software company says this got them thinking. Could there be other clients in a similar predicament? They searched a bit and found that there were clients who had such a need. Research also showed that there were other software companies that were using a similar model already.

The cloud was still some years away, but that is how the SaaS model was born.
