Big Data and Cloud Computing – A marriage made in heaven?
In parallel with cloud computing, there is another rising star that has the potential to change our computing environment. And that is Big Data. This is the rise of massive, unstructured data and the tools to make sense of it. Naturally, big data means big systems and this means cloud based applications. Big Data and cloud computing is all set to change the way our organizations will work.
The first acknowledgement of big data is in the emergence of massively parallel computing frameworks. Hadoop is an early mover, but soon there will be many others. But merely handling large quantities of data is not all, you have to do it fast and keep the process interactive as well. When Big Data concepts first emerged, they tended to focus on genome studies, astrophysics, weather forecasting and so on. Today however, the field has extended to supply chain optimization, strategic planning and other applications. When data of astronomical quantities are involved, the only place to manipulate it is in the cloud.
